The 2nd International Film Festival & Awards ‧ Macao An Unprecedented Cinematic Extravaganza
16th June 2017 (Friday) A kick-off ceremony was held today for the 2nd International Film Festival & Awards ‧ Macao (IFFAM), slated to take place between 8th (Friday) and 14th (Thursday) December, to announce the line-up of the Organizing Committee and the new International Professional Team for the year’s edition of IFFAM. The occasion also saw the unraveling of the theme “A NEW AVENUE TO THE WORLD OF FILMS” in tandem with three focuses for a brand-new viewing experience. Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director and President of IFFAM Organizing Committee Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes joined Mike Goodridge, the new Artistic Director of IFFAM, and Talent Ambassador Miriam Yeung to announce the 2nd IFFAM as it starts a new chapter.
The 2nd IFFAM will ring up the curtain at Macao Cultural Centre between 8th and 14th December. The IFFAM Organizing Committee will join forces with this year’s International Professional Team in a bid to continue the successful streak of the inaugural festival in promoting Macao as an epicentre of cultural tourism and international exchange, paving the way for the future development of Macao’s film and creative industries. Over 500 local and international media representatives, international buyers, directors, talent, producers, distributors and investors will join a stellar cast of iconic names at the festival this year.
In her speech, Fernandes said the Macao SAR government had been supporting a great variety of events and celebrations to enrich the experience of overseas visitors. The inaugural IFFAM last year was widely recognized as one of the government’s successful endeavours to promote Macao through a combination of cultural and tourism elements. With a new International Professional Team on board, she expressed hope for IFFAM to deliver another world-class festival with a new pizzazz.
The 2nd edition of IFFAM has the honour to welcome Mike Goodridge as Artistic Director. Goodridge, with unique and invaluable experience of being on the jury of over 25 international film festivals as well as former CEO of Protagonist Pictures engaging in film finance, production and distribution, will bring along new impetus to IFFAM. “Local audiences will be drawn by a colourful and exciting programme, while international guests and industry will not only get to taste the excitement of Macao as a destination but meet the Chinese and Asian industries and explore the best of new films from Asia,” says Goodridge.
Famed Asian actress and singer Miriam Yeung is delighted at being part of the year’s IFFAM as Talent Ambassador. A film buff herself, Miriam has first-hand understanding of the challenge the film industry has been faced with. To her, the festival offers a platform where she can exchange with international members of the industry while promoting the event to a wider audience. This much-anticipated platform, allowing creative juices to flow beyond established framework, provides invaluable opportunity for the industry to explore new possibilities.
“A NEW AVENUE TO THE WORLD OF FILMS” for a New Cinematic Experience
This year’s IFFAM continues to tread new ground with a surprisingly new cinematic experience that is eclectic and innovative at once, from viewers’ as well as industrial perspectives. The festival serves as a bridge that connects the audience and the world, while allowing new forces to showcase their talents.
The Jewel of East-meets-West Attraction
Macao, a place renowned for its East-meets-West culture, is the perfect setting for a film festival that brings together local and international industry professionals. In the Crossfire section, six eminent directors will each present a genre classic that has inspired them, in the hope of broadening the horizons of the new generation audience and filmmakers with cinematic classics from different eras.
This extravaganza that transcends culture and time will also bring together some cross-generation productions for family viewing, confirming the multifaceted cultural and creative vibe of Macao.
The feature film competition program would be dedicated exclusively to films by first and second time film-makers and the jury would award a $60,000 prize for best feature. “This is a young festival and we think that our international competition should consist of work from young directors who can offer fresh perspectives on the world we live in,” said Goodridge.
New Platform, New Perspectives
Enjoy new films from new perspectives and explore new horizons in the cinematic realm at this year’s IFFAM. Meanwhile Goodridge, Tee and head of industry June Wu will focus on making the IFFAM Industry Hub an effective meeting point for select industry from both Asia and the west, bringing new ideas, finance and stories together in an informal atmosphere. The co-production market which started so successfully last year will continue again this year with 14 productions selected that combine elements of east and west.
A Feast for the Eyes & Palate
Like an exquisite dish, a good film with creative spark is something to indulge in. As Macao is one of the world’s great food centers, the festival will also feature a large gastronomic presence both on and off the screen, and launch a new section of titles for family audiences.
The 2nd IFFAM Organizing Committee comprises governmental representatives, film professionals and others. MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes takes up the role of President, while President of Cultural Affairs Bureau Leung Hio Ming, President of Management Committee of Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau José Tavares and President of Macau Films & Television Productions and Culture Association Alvin Chau are the Executive Vice Presidents of the IFFAM Organizing Committee.
