A samurai, his beautiful wife, and a thief meet one sheltering summer day. Passion and violence lead to death and ruin. During the subsequent trial, the incident is recounted from four points of view – the three protagonists and a woodcutter who claims to have discovered the crime. Each has a radically different story to tell about the same incident.
