Programmer’s Note

Documentary hybrid Love Poem is the second feature from director William Wong whom some will know from his critically acclaimed 2013 film Around That Water. Utterly original and intellectually challenging, the film is both formally and in content very distant from other recent independent Chinese films, testifying to the vast and diverse vitality in mainland film. Defying the law of cinema, which centres on the pursuit of commercial success, the film seems to focus instead on a personal search for honesty within a detailed investigation of the conflicts and emotions that run through a couple dynamic – the couple being the director of the film, Wang Xiaozhen and his wife Zhou Qing who both act in the film. Divided into two parts and two long takes, Love Poem echoes Cassavetes or Noah Baumbach but remains unique in its exploration of this particular Chinese couple’s private life, bringing to the screen a level of intimacy rarely seen in Asian movies.
