Programmer’s Note

Swedish director Magnus Van Horn, who now lives and works in Poland, makes one of the more persuasive cinematic statements on human problems in the digital age with his second feature Sweat. Central to his portrait of how the web isolates not unites us is his lead character Sylwia Zajac – played in a knockout performance, as emotional as it is physical, by Magdalena Kolesnik. Sylwia is a wonderful creation, a popular fitness guru, who genuinely loves inspiring her internet fan base through rigorous workouts and nutrition tips. But aside from her Insta-fans and myriad “likes”, she hasn’t got much going on in her life, and her loneliness is getting on top of her. Van Horn cleverly shows how her web life and her real life have blended together, and how her fitness, beauty and superficial insta-happiness cannot compensate for the gaping well of despair growing inside her.

Synopsis

Sweat recounts three days in the life of 30 year-old fitness motivator Sylwia Zając, whose presence on social media has made her a celebrity. She is self-made and hard-working, keeping her own body in the best possible shape as well as inspiring others to do the same. However, although she has hundreds of thousands of followers, is surrounded by loyal employees and admired by acquaintances, she is starved of true intimacy and longs for a meaningful human connection.
