Programmer’s Note

Italian director Filippo Meneghetti delivers an ambitious mix of emotions in his debut (French) feature: there are elements of suspense and mystery in this supremely moving love story which unfolds between two older women. The shooting style is sensitive and elusive but the emotions between Mado (Martine Chevallier) and Nina (Barbara Sukowa) are fiery and deep. This reflects the fact that Mado has hidden their love from her grown-up family; Nina moved from Germany to France to live across the hallway from the love of her life, but nobody knows about the passions that consume them. So when Mado is debilitated by a stroke, what can or will Nina do to care for the woman she loves so deeply? Veteran actress Barbara Sukowa takes the easily-identifiable role of the panic-stricken Nina and turns it into a portrait of a resourceful woman who has been backed into a corner. Unforgettable.

Synopsis

Nina and Madeleine, two retired women, are secretly deeply in love and have been for decades. From everybody’s point of view, including Madeleine’s family, they are simply neighbours living on the top floor of their building. But away from prying eyes, they come and go between their two apartments, sharing the tender delights of everyday life together. Until the day their relationship is turned upside down by an unexpected event that will send their lives into a tailspin and inadvertently reveal the truth to everyone around them.
