Programmer’s Note

In 1968, during the most repressive phase of Brazilian military dictatorship, singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso – one of the greatest Brazilian musical artists of all time – was arrested. He was 26 at the time, and already famous. Now in his 70s and a worldwide legend, Caetano Veloso gives a fascinating and moving interview, taking us back to that cell with him, showing the inhumanity of the regime and how he felt he could express his resistance in the 54 days of his imprisonment. He also demonstrates how songs – like Hey Jude, which he sings in the film – gave him hope in the darkest moments of the ordeal. With the camera simply facing Veloso as he interprets music, politics and memories, the film-makers are infinitely wise not to add any other elements to tell the story. Here, less is much more.

Synopsis

On December 13th, 1968, the Brazilian military dictatorship passed Institutional Act Number Five (AI-5), marking the start of the regime’s most repressive and violent phase. Two weeks later, singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso was arrested. He was taken from his São Paulo home to Rio de Janeiro, where he was shut in solitary confinement for one week and ultimately imprisoned for 54 days. It was the most difficult experience of his life. 50 years later, now a global music legend, Veloso recalls his incarceration, the songs that marked those days and the arbitrary brutality of the time.
