Programmer’s Note

It’s a cinematic mind trick: even though you strongly suspect how a story will end, you go along for the ride and let yourself pretend you don’t know the outcome. And that is what happened this year in multiplexes all over mainland China as millions of people had their nerves shredded by modern master of action Andrew Lau in his flight-from-hell recreation The Captain. Lau is on top form as he makes us care about the crew of flight 3U8633 including ice cool captain Zhang Hanyu and chief flight attendant Bi Nan before hurling them (and us) into a maelstrom of heartstopping suspense when the windscreen cracks and then shatters. Lau engineers every step with expert control, recalling the very best of airplane-in-peril movies from Airport to Sully. A nail-biting rollercoaster ride.

Synopsis

A cinematic portrayal of one of the most miraculous emergency landings in the contemporary history of Chinese aviation. The incident took place on May 14, 2018, at 30,000 feet on Sichuan Airlines flight 3U8633 which was flying from the southern city of Chongqing to Lhasa. About 40 minutes after takeoff, the cockpit windshield shattered and flung the aircraft into a state of low pressure with temperatures at minus 40 degree Celsius over the Tibetan plateau. The clock was ticking and the challenge facing Captain Liu Chuan Jian was to bring the aircraft down safely as communication with control tower was lost and much of the operating system of the plane was damaged. And a massive storm loomed ahead…
