Programmer’s Note

Although sushi and ramen are consumed all over the world, one Japanese specialty that is less celebrated is tonkatsu – a deep-fried pork cutlet whose crispy, juicy texture is a must-try. Ken Ninomiya’s broad comedy places this tasty dish at the heart of a jocular story about a waiter from a tonkatsu restaurant who longs to be a DJ. Using an outstanding selection of classic songs, feelgood dance beats and a theme song by US superstar Bruno Mars, Ninomiya brings his experience in music videos to create a film with a sense of groove and rhythm. Takumi Kitamura gives a charming lead performance and the film was shot – unusually – in the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo, featuring Hachiko, Scramble Crossing and a host of hip dance clubs. But when you have finished watching it, your first craving will be to take a big bite of tonkatsu.

HIROMI AIHARA

Synopsis

Agetaro is the heir to his family’s long-running tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) restaurant in Shibuya, Tokyo. He spends his days chopping cabbages and slacking off because he has nothing else better to do. One day, he goes to a dance club to deliver a bento, and is thrilled to get a chance to speak to Sonoko, the girl he secretly has a crush on. He also experiences the excitement of the dance floor grooving to the music for the first time, and is filled with an uplifting sensation that he has never felt before. To win Sonoko’s heart, Agetaro decides to become the “Tonkatsu DJ,” a guy who can cook both tonkatsu and the dance floor!
