Programmer’s Note

The fallout from a teen suicide is at the heart of this morally complex drama which marks the second film of Yujiro Harumoto and signals the emergence of a new Japanese film-maker with a bright future. Don’t be put off by the running time: this film grabs you early on and doesn’t let go its riveting grip until the dramatic final moments. The conundrum at its core is a relevant one everywhere – are we able to judge those guilty of misdemeanors when we ourselves – or our family members – are prone to making the same mistakes? Playing the strong-willed TV journalist, Kumi Takiuchi brings dignity and passion to her work, and continues to build her name as one of Japan’s strongest new actresses. She is backed up by a superb, well-balanced ensemble including the prolific character actor Ken Mitsuishi as her badly behaved father.

Synopsis

Documentary director Yuko is putting together a TV segment about bereaved families connected to the suicide of a schoolgirl who had been badly bullied. Determined to shed light on the truth, Yuko’s uncompromising nature brings her into conflict with conservative-minded management at the television network, but she succeeds in getting her interview subjects to emerge from their shells and place their trust in her. But when Yuko discovers that her father Masashi, a cram-school teacher, has made a grave error of judgment with one his students, she finds herself with a new perspective on the news story as a close relative of the “victimizer.”
