Programmer’s Note

Ukraine-born actor Alec Utgoff electrifies Never Gonna Snow Again, a scintillating contemporary drama from Polish auteur Małgorzata Szumowska which she co-directed with her longtime DOP Michał Englert. Utgoff – channeling Terence Stamp in Teorema and a touch of Marina Abramovic – doesn’t say much as Zhenia, the masseur whose calm, charisma, muscular arms and magic hands mesmerize the women and occasional man in a wealthy housing enclave in modern-day Poland. But his hypnotizing gaze and solidly handsome face have a similar effect on us, and Szumowska and Englert, while gently mocking his rich clients and their empty lives, are also using Zhenia to hold up a mirror to ourselves. Peopled by a rich ensemble of kooky characters, the film is funny and frisky, but when they want to, the directors switch the mood with gorgeous poetic moments of visual grace.

One grey, foggy morning in a large, Eastern European city, a mysterious man appears carrying a massage bed. The visitor uses magical, hypnotic techniques to get a residence permit and starts working as a masseur in a wealthy suburban housing estate. The identical houses are inhabited by an array of well-to-do representatives of the upper class. They seem to feel an inner sadness, a longing. The masseur, an attractive man from the authentic, exotic East enters their lives. He has a gift. His hands heal, his eyes penetrate the souls of the lonely women. Zhenia, for this is his name, will change their lives.
