Programmer’s Note

The wonderfully prolific François Ozon delivers a delicious slice of summer sun and teen romance wrapped up in the nostalgic soundtrack of the mid-1980s in Summer Of 85. There are many motifs from the Ozon canon here. It’s framed as murder mystery (think Criminal Lovers, Swimming Pool), is drenched in youthful beauty, longing and desire (A Summer Dress, Young & Beautiful) and melancholy and loss (Five By Two, Time To Leave). But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t fresh, breezy and playful, and, as he has done many times before, the director introduces impressive new actors in the form of Felix Lebefvre and Benjamin Voisin while showcasing reassuring old favourites Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Melvil Poupaud in supporting roles. Meanwhile, viewers of a certain age will smile at the vintage songs Ozon throws at us from In Between Days by The Cure to Cruel Summer by Bananarama and Sailing by Rod Stewart.

Synopsis

When 16-year-old Alexis capsizes off the coast of Normandy, 18-year-old David heroically saves him. Alexis has just met the friend of his dreams, and he is welcomed into the house he shares with his charming mother. He even gets a job in the family store, and the two young men fall in love swiftly and deeply. But if it seems too good to be true, it probably is, and soon Alexis starts to feel that David is shifting his attentions elsewhere.

Director

François Ozon

One of France’s great contemporary film-makers, François Ozon was educated at the legendary film school La Fémis and made several well-known shorts before his acclaimed debut feature Sitcom in 1998. Since then, he has been incredibly prolific, making at least one film a year and regularly featured in the selections of Cannes, Venice and Berlin. Some of his most celebrated titles are Under The Sand (2000), 8 Women (2002), Swimming Pool (2003), Potiche (2010), Frantz (2016) and By The Grace Of God (2019). Summer Of 85 was selected for Cannes under its Cannes label in May and went on to play in Toronto, San Sebastian and Busan.
